What are eczema and atopic dermatitis?
The skin is one of the more complex organs of the human body and because it is subject to the elements of this world's environment it is very vulnerable. Your skin is affected by the foods you eat, your lifestyle, smoking and drinking habits etc. Your skin needs protection from excess sun and, caustic environmental elements. If you improve upon your life style, be health conscious, and take care of your skin in general, you can prevent many skin disorders. If properly cared for, your skin should be able to defend itself from external enemies. Considering its thinness, the skin is quite resistant to most "attacks" from the environment. However, sometimes, due to genetics or disease, you can become susceptible to skin irritations and or inflammations. We call this inflamed condition of your skin: dermatitis. Some examples of dermatitis are: allergic reactions, sunburn, rosacea or hives when capillaries of the skin become enlarged because of food or chemical of irritation or inflammation.

Systemic activities of the skin can also go wrong. For example, the production of too many skin cells (in the case of psoriasis); an over production of oil (causing acne) or an under production of oil (excessive dryness); an over or under production of melanin which causes differences in pigmentation of the skin on various areas of the body, etc.
Eczema/Atopic dermatitis is indicated by an itchy, fissured, thickened skin. Changing skin colors indicates outbreaks of eczema or red raised skin patches. They can grow to form larger areas. One of the worse aspects of eczema is itching and consequently, the uncontrollable urge to scratch. Excessive scratching often leads to thickening of the skin, breaks in the skin, scabbing, flaking, crusts extension of the patches or lesions and, consequently, infection (herpes simplex virus).
Dermatitis - eczema skin diseases include the following variations:
  • Contact dermatitis which can be either toxic or allergic in origin.
  • Atopic dermatitis (endogenous eczema).
  • Seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Photo-dermatitis.
Pruritis
Pruritis is the medical term for itching. Itching appears, or is associated, with most scaly skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and even dry aging skin. Itching can indicate a systemic condition such as liver or kidney dysfunction. But also certain codeine related drugs and aspirin can cause itching. In addition, patients under severe stress experience itching. For the eczemic patient, the itch feels like a "serious pain". It is perhaps the most painful part of having a scaly skin disease. Histamine is the most important agent responsible for itch. Histamine is produced by the membranes of mast cells when activated by tissue damages and infection. Stabilization of these membranes will decrease histamine production during activation of the mast cells and reduce itch. Use Natural PsoriaLess® to control itching, effectively.
  • In case you experience severe itching with your eczema, do apply Natural PsoriaLess® to control the itching, effectively.

  • Use little or no commercial soaps, instead use a natural ph neutral, non alkali type soap, or, for instance, a baby soap.

  • Take oily (mineral oils), or oatmeal or starch (laundry starch) and soda (baking soda) baths.

  • Do not use lotions, moisturizers containing alcohol, instead use Natural PsoriaLess®.

  • Increase the humidity level of your surroundings, if you can. Keep room temperatures cool.

Is there a cure?

Eczema and/or Atopic dermatitis are synonyms for chronic skin irritation. This skin irritation is not an allergic reaction, but it is skin hypersensitivity due to hereditary influences. Eczema and/or Atopic dermatitis is a chronic disease characterized by flare-ups and remissions. There is no cure for the condition, however, it has been known to clear up spontaneously.

Bouts with eczema are often triggered by sweat retention, excessive moisture or dryness of the skin, stress, fatigue,  and by consuming certain types of food or foods to which one is allergic. Patients with eczema often have hay fever or allergic asthma. Eczema is not contagious or an infectious condition. As with psoriasis, about 2-3% of the world population suffers from eczema.

Eczema often starts in infancy, where it is typically found on the face or groin. In young children, it is often seen on the inside of the elbow or back of the knee. in adults, it may affect the hands, feet, ankle, or groin. Patients with a tendency to eczema may also get hand eczema. This is particularly the case if they are in an occupation requiring frequent hand washing, such as dental hygienists, healthcare workers, cooks, bakers etc.
